In June 2018, Sunflower Creative Arts launched Sunflower Play Initiative, to be a play advocate resource for the South Florida community as an effort to resolve the play crisis. Child-directed unstructured free play has declined over the decades, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that pediatricians prescribe “Play” to young children. Experts in psychology, sociology and education agree that child-directed free play is crucial to the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical well-being of children, and today’s children do not get enough play.
The Sunflower Play Initiative’s mission is to shine light on the profound power of play by being a play resource for the community. Since the start of this initiative, we have brought play opportunities to over 1,000 children in the community by hosting over 20 Pop-Up Build and Play events and we have also provided workshops and education for over 75 parents and educators on the many benefits of child-directed free play.
Our vision is to bring back play to every child’s life, every day.
Build & Play is a community program of Sunflower Creative Arts, a Delray Beach based 501c3 nonprofit empowering children to be confident, creative and compassionate through Play, Nature and the Arts. We are funded by donors, grants, Sunflower Creative Arts and Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County.
